The Cat and Canary (1927 -
65 minutes) is a silent horror/murder-mystery comedy that uses German
Expressionistic techniques. Directed by noted German director, Paul
Levi, it was Universal's earliest horror production and became the
cornerstone of Universal's school of horror. Based on the hit Broadway
play of the same name, it has been remade several times, most notably
starring Bob Hope.
The star of the film is Laura La Plante, at the time one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood.
This presentation includes a new score
by Dan Schaaf and voice-overs by several local actors with sound
effects. Dan is perhaps best known for his rock opera, 'MACBETH!' and
more recently for his 'BELLE, THE MURDER MUSICAL' and 'REMEMBERING
NAOMI', a suite for concert band. His silent film scores have been
shown at the Vicker's Theater and The Acorn in Three Oaks, several
Chicago venues, State Theater South Bend, Notre Dame and throughout
North West Indiana.
